This safari is especially created for guests of the Hurtigruten arriving in Mehamn harbourat 01:15, but can also be participated by other guests.

This adventure gives you a good opportunity to see the most amazing starlit sky as we are driving in the absolute darkness, with no disturbing light pollution.

The safari starts at 01:00 in the morning atthe Nordic Safari Base changing room. Here you will get warm and comfortable snowmobile outfit and our professional guides will learn you all about safety and driving technique.

We are driving 12 kilometresfrom the northermost fishing village on the European continent Mehamn, towards the fishing village Kjøllefjord.

During the safari we will take a break in the mountainsbyour sami tent, where we have time to enjoy the nature and hopefully a starlit sky with flaming northern lights. Hot drinks will be served.

We continue the safari to the road going to Kjøllefjord, after a short break we continue back to the starting point in Mehamn.

Welcome to our Guided snowmobile safari, drive your own snowmobile safely guided by our professional guide team. The guides learn you all about safety and how to drive the snowmobile.

The safari starts at 16:00 in the afternoon at the Nordic Safari Base changing room in Mehamn. Here you will get warm and comfortable snowmobile outfit. Your snowmobile guide will drive you safely by minibus 15 kms to the crossroad to Mehamn. Where we find the snowmobiles parked and ready

Well arrived we start the snowmobile instructions. The guide will tell you everything learn you all about safety and how to drive the snowmobile.

We start out in the flat and snow rich landscape

Enjoying the tour through the arctic wilderness looking for the northern lights. It is a spectacular view to see the Northern Light flaming over the sky in pink, violet, blue, green and even red colors. As we are driving at the Northernmost mainland of Europe and have total darkness when we turn the lights off on the snowmobiles, the chances to see the Northern Light is very high. An experience you surely don’t wan’t to miss!

2 Hour Snowmobile Safari Hunting The Light

I am happy to invite you to an exciting expedition on this archipelago located on the top of the world between 74° and 81° north.

We will follow the footsteps of the first known visitor, the Dutch explorer, Wilhelm Barents. He discovered the islands in 1596. During the 17th century there was a large scale of whaling in the summer months and after that followed the trappers. In the 18th century, explorers like Umberto Nobile, Roald Amundsen & Fridtjof Nansen made the area famous (search for these names in the library – nice to know).

In the 19th century, an American called John M. Longyear started mining coal and gave the Norwegian capitol its name – Longyearbyen. Today with 1000 inhabitants. In addition to the Norwegian mining town Longyearbyen, there is one Russian settlement -Barentsburg With 700-1000 inhabitants. The archipelago is under Norwegian sovereignity and ruled by Norwegian laws.
